Oropharyngeal infection with metastatic hand infection: an uncommon variant of Lemierre's syndrome.
نویسندگان
چکیده
Lemierre's syndrome is caused by acute oropharyngeal infection with septic secondary thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein and metastatic infection. Fusobacterium necrophorum is the most commonly implicated aetiological agent. The authors present the case of a healthy young man presenting with a history of general malaise and sore throat who developed septic metastatic complications in the left upper limb. He made a complete recovery after treatment with a combination of parenteral antibiotics and a multidisciplinary approach. Early ultrasound scanning of the neck and blood cultures are advocated to diagnose this potentially fatal condition. Management involves a high degree of clinical suspicion for this often 'forgotten' condition and treatment is further discussed in the article.

Lemierre's syndrome in a patient with severe lupus nephritis.
Lemierre's syndrome is a rare septic thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein with frequent metastatic complications following an acute oropharyngeal infection. Immunocompromised patients are at higher risk of developing this syndrome owing to the decreased host response and increased risk of oropharyngeal sepsis. We herein report a 24-year-old woman with severe lupus nephritis on immunosu...
متن کامل[Septic thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein and Lemierre syndrome].
The authors report a case of Lemierre's syndrome. This uncommon clinical entity is characterized by a septic internal jugular vein thrombosis with secondary metastatic abscesses and Fusobacterium necrophorum septicemia, following an acute oropharyngeal infection. The diagnosis is primarily clinical and it should be suspected when a severe septicaemic illness, with pulmonary symptoms, occurs aft...
متن کاملThe 'forgotten disease' (or the never known).
Lemierre's syndrome is an acute oropharyngeal infection with secondary septic thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein and frequent metastatic infections. Despite its rarity, it is important to have a high degree of clinical suspicion to recognise it early. A history of sore throat followed by metastatic infections and abscesses should alert the clinician to the possibility of this unusual...

BACKGROUND Lemierre's syndrome is a rare condition characterized by thrombophlebitis of internal jugular vein, septicemia and septic metastatic infection of different organs. It is preceded by an oropharyngeal infection by anaerobic organisms. Community-acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus is now emerging as a causative organism in Lemierre's syndrome. Clinical manifestations va...
